High Detailed Terrain Modelling at Blessington Demesne, Co. Wicklow

The remains of Downshire House in Blessington Demesne are surrounded by landscape garden features dating from the 17th century onwards. This planned relic landscape provides an ideal opportunity for high detailed Terrain Modelling survey as part of a pre-development Archaeological Impact Assessment Study.

The demesne has terraces, ponds and avenues, Baroque style gardens as well as a prominent bastion and an interesting canal feature. The lands are also host to a number of fluvio-glacial features in the form of kettle holes, as well as a Bronze Age Barrow site.

A few of these features are very prominent present upstanding topographical features and may be seen on aerial photography of the area. The majority have survived as subtle undulations on the ground barely discernible by the naked eye. A Series of linear and sub-rectangular patterns combined with small depressions and large hollows form a complex and interesting landscape.
