Aerial Photography We have developed a service in oblique aerial photography within our EIS and Survey Departments. Archaeological features are often visible above ground as cropmarks, soil marks and shadowed earthworks that are highlighted by oblique sunlight. Oblique photographs can provide both illustrative material and a means of conducting relatively low-cost mapping of archaeological features. The Irish Aviation Authority regulations allow photographs to be taken at an altitude of 500 feet or higher over rural areas, enabling detailed images to be captured. The photographs are routinely taken from a 5-seater (pilot plus four passengers) Jet Ranger helicopter. Flights using a 4-seater Robinson R-44 helicopter or fixed-wing Cessna 172 aircraft can also be arranged.
Kilmore see lands, Co. Cavan Aerial survey projects undertaken by Margaret Gowen & Company to date have enabled previously unrecorded archaeological features to be identified, mapped and interpreted. These have included features as subtle as cropmarks that are only visible from the air and that could not be identified during standard site inspections. Aerial survey of this nature is particularly useful in the context of environmental impact assessment, where reconnaissance survey and detailed mapping may be required over large areas.
