Excavations at Exchange Street Upper/Parliament Street, Dublin

By Margaret Gowen with Georgina Scally

This summary report, the forth in the series Archaeology in Temple Bar, provides an outline description of excavations at 5-7 Exchange Street Upper/33-34 Parliament Street. The excavations revealed a complex and diverse archaeological record from which emerged a sequence of archaeological events that can be placed into the existing historical and archaeological record of Dublin. Three radiocarbon determinations and two of the small finds from the site suggest the possibility that the earliest occupation levels and structures of the study site may predate the early tenth century. The site's strategic location between the River Poddle and River Liffey in the northeast corner of the early town also has parallels in the topographic location of other early Viking settlements.

The report is available through Temple Bar Properties.
