The HLC process recognises that the present landscape is the result of changes and continuities from the past. It assesses all aspects of the landscape, not just ‘special’ areas or point data associated with the protection of monuments and sites. The protection of the historic landscape requires not only designation but good management support by information and understanding. The challenge is to sustain the character of the landscape in the face of future changes. Our experienced team creates historic landscape datasets (GIS) linked to historical analysis which can be successfully used as an integrated historic landscape planning tool to promote a sense of identity of place. It is hoped that HLC can provide a practical input into future landscape management decisions at a local, regional and national level, increasing the understanding and appreciation of the historic landscape across the community.
